Labor Day passed earlier this week, and if you drove past Gunstock or the pavilion this week, you'd be forgiven for thinking nothing had changed. The parking lots are still full on weekends. The lake still has boats on it. But Gilford's actual seasonal shift doesn't happen on a holiday weekend at all. It happens on Monday, September 21, when the mountain's own calendar forks in half: one part of Gunstock stays weekend-only through November 1, while another part of the same resort switches to running every single day for the first time since ski season.
Most people never notice the split because nobody advertises it as a single event. It shows up as two separate schedule changes listed on Gunstock's own hours page. But if you live here and plan your falls around this mountain, the fork is the actual hinge of the season, and getting the two halves confused means showing up on a Tuesday for something that only runs on Saturday, or the reverse.
The mountain that contracts and expands at the same time
Since August 30, Gunstock's Adventure Park has already been running weekends only. The mountain coaster, the 1.6-mile zipline network, the Aerial Treetop Adventure course: all of it moved from a Thursday-through-Sunday summer schedule down to Saturday and Sunday only, and it stays that way through November 1. If you've been meaning to take the kids on the coaster or finally do the treetop course before it closes for the year, you now have weekends through November 1 to do it, and no weekday option in between.
The Scenic Lift Ride runs the opposite direction. Starting September 21, the Panorama chairlift and the Panorama Pub attached to it switch to daily operation through November 1, the only stretch of the year the chairlift runs seven days a week outside of ski season. It's a 15-minute ride to a summit where Mount Washington is visible 50 miles off on a clear day, with the Belknap Mountains and the lake laid out below.
The day before that daily schedule kicks in, Gunstock runs one more version of its summer perk for the people who actually live here. Sunday, September 20, is a Belknap County Day, the recurring event where county residents show a driver's license at the ticket office and get a free ride on the coaster or the chairlift, no purchase required. Gunstock has run these days roughly monthly through the warm months for years, and based on the schedule the resort has posted, this is the next one on the calendar and the last one before the chairlift stops needing any special weekend designation at all. Gunstock's president, Robert Drake, has said locals and visitors to the Lakes Region love the range of activities the resort offers in summer, and County Day is where that gets handed back to the neighbors directly, for free, one Sunday at a time.
What's still loud on Meadowbrook Lane
While the mountain is sorting out which half of itself runs on what schedule, BankNH Pavilion is finishing its own year in a hurry. Tedeschi Trucks Band played the venue on September 6. From here, the calendar doesn't slow down: John Mulaney brings his stand-up show on September 10, O.A.R. plays September 13 with Gavin DeGraw and KT Tunstall opening, Hayley Williams headlines September 14, Dan + Shay come through September 18, Dermot Kennedy plays September 24, and Jason Aldean closes out back-to-back nights on September 25 and 26.
That's seven show dates in just over two weeks, which is a heavier pace than the pavilion runs at almost any other point in the season. Separately, the pavilion's own box office only stays open late May through late September, Monday through Friday. Once that window closes, so does the easy walk-up ticket option, and the outdoor amphitheater season effectively wraps for the year. If you've been putting off a show because the weather felt too good to sit inside, this run of dates is the last full slate before the season winds down.
The beach outlasts the bar, and neither outlasts the mountain
Not everything on the lake winds down at the same pace, and the order matters if you're trying to plan a last visit to any of it.
Ellacoya State Park's swimming beach and 37-site RV campground follow a schedule of their own, and it's a longer runway than either Gunstock or the pavilion gets. The park's general seasonal outline still lists the campground as running through Columbus Day weekend, which falls on October 12 this year. But the live reservation system for the campground currently shows availability stretching all the way to October 24, nearly two weeks past that traditional cutoff. After Columbus Day, the bathhouse and shower facilities close, though water service stays on for the full hookup sites, so campers who stay into that stretch are working with a leaner version of the park than the one they had in July.
What Ellacoya doesn't have this year is company on the water in quite the same way. In July, The Dive, the floating bar and restaurant that anchored at the Smalls Cove sandbar near West Alton Marina, burned and was destroyed. It wasn't a Gilford business by address, but it was a Winnipesaukee institution by reputation, the kind of place boaters waded through chest-high water to reach, phones held over their heads. Firefighters from Gilford were among the crews that responded that Saturday afternoon along with Alton, Tuftonboro, and Wolfeboro. No one was hurt, but the boat itself, three decks and nearly 70 feet long, was gone. As The Boston Globe reported, one regular who spent summer weekends on the lake called it simply "the place to be," and this year there isn't a version of it to return to.
That absence changes what "the end of the season" means for anyone whose summer routine included a boat trip out to the sandbar. The lake still has its bars and its docks, but it lost the one spot that only existed between Memorial Day and Labor Day, on the water, with no other way in.
Six weeks, as the season winds down
If you're trying to fit in what's left of the season, here's the rundown, not a wish list but the dates and schedules that shape what's left:
- September 20: The last Belknap County Day of the year gives residents one more free coaster or chairlift ride before the schedule changes. Gunstock's Adventure Park remains weekend-only through November 1.
- September 21 through November 1: The Panorama chairlift and pub switch to daily operation, the only stretch all year the lift runs every day outside ski season, while the coaster and zipline stay weekend-only on the same mountain.
- Through late September: BankNH Pavilion runs its final concentrated run of shows, closing with Jason Aldean's two nights on September 25 and 26, right around when the box office itself stops keeping regular hours.
- Through October 12: Ellacoya's campground holds to its traditional Columbus Day weekend close, though this year's reservation system suggests it may run longer.
- Through October 24: The latest date currently showing for Ellacoya campground availability, water service still running to full hookup sites even after the bathhouse closes.
For dinner in between any of that, The Breeze on Dock Road at Glendale Docks keeps its lakefront tables running past Labor Day, which is worth knowing if you want a meal with a water view before the docks themselves start emptying out for the year.
None of these dates move because a calendar says autumn started. They move because a resort, a venue, and a state park each run their own internal math on staffing, weather, and demand, and this year that math happens to cluster into the same three-week stretch. If you live here, that's the actual shape of the season's end, not a single day but a fork, a closing run of shows, and a beach that quietly outlasts all of it.
Cheryl Zarella & Associates keeps a close eye on these kinds of local rhythms, not because a chairlift schedule sells houses, but because knowing exactly how a place like Gilford moves through its seasons is part of knowing the town at all. If you're weighing a move to the lake, thinking about a second home nearby, or just want a local's read on what's coming next, the team at Cheryl Zarella & Associates is happy to talk, whether that conversation starts with a fall hike or a complimentary home valuation.
